The Learning Curve
Linda Pearce
When I attended our February meeting and made
the difficult decision of selecting my favorite challenge
quilts, I suddenly realized that we are the
pioneer quilters of the 21st century. What a mind
boggling thought. For our background, we have
our quilt heritage from the early 18th through the
20th centuries. Now, in 2007, we have the widest
selection of fabrics, fibers, threads, patterns,
books, tools, and battings in history. If we can’t
find it in one of our seven area quilt shops, we
have the Internet. We can even design our quilts
and fabrics on our computers.
What will historians say about our quilts? What
will our contribution be? Will we be content to
continue as we always have or will our generation
chart new ways, incorporate new ideas, create new
quilting dimensions?
From what I see at “Show and Tell”, we are a creative
group of “sister quilters”. We have the tools,
we have the ideas, and we have the skills. To complete
our repertoire, we even have wonderful educational
opportunities. How many of you have yet
to take a class this season? For those of you who
missed some truly fantastic classes, it is not too
late. Opportunities are still there. Will you educate
your way into the 21st century?
